Journey with me through time and space...
Back to 1983 a small rotund kid is sat in a Design & Technology class in Friern Barnet County School in North London ( tres posh, n'est pas? )
So sat in the class doing some drawing and look over to the bench that ran along the windows and on there is a Telly and a small black thing that looks like an oversized calculator. Teacher ( Mr Preston ) walks over and turns the TV on and then the calculator. Sticks a cassette into a tape recorder and presses some keys. Then there is some screeching, whoops and beeps coming from said calculator. Now we have a picture on the TV, it says "The Hobbit" and one by one the kids in the class stop what they are doing and turn to watch. What is a "Hobbit"? I think to myself as I had not read any Tolkien at this point. So now we have a white screen...no there is a picture being drawn on the screen, how is it doing that? Now there is some text underneath, and Mr Preston is pressing the keys. By now most of the kids are not at their desks anymore we are all standing behind him watching what he is doing. So he has said "East" and now the picture has changed and it says something about "The Lonelands" there is a new picture too. How is this little black calculator doing this? it's telling a story but you are part of it and can tell it what to do. Now kids are starting to make suggestions as to what to do next. Then Mr Preston lets others have a go as some "Bulbous eys dropped something on him". No-one goes for the normal game of footie during breaktime we all stay in the classroom.
This is the start of the Friern Barnet County School Computer Club
I go home and badger my Mum into buying "The Hobbit" Book and I am hooked... The Lord of the Rings follows soon after as well.
I buy "The Hobbit" for the ZX Spectrum - I don't own a ZX Spectrum yet but I am working on my Father and have a cunning plan...
Yes "The Hobbit" had a big impact on me so It has to go into my personal Top 10 games because of this.
