Similar to the Recreated Romantic Robot Multiface I have talked about here is the finished Multiface 2 I was building. The build went really well until I hit a problem with it not working. The BOM stated a 27c64 ( 8K EPROM ) and I had some of those already so I burned one originally as one 8K as the ROM image was duplicated to make 16K, well that didn't work out so I then tried the original 8K ROM for the Multiface 2 from Romantic Robot and again that did not work. It was at this point I thought I had done something wrong so I checked everything and couldn't see the problem. I contacted my mate Bertrand who sent me the PCB and the SMD Logic Chips and he told me that I needed a 27c128 ( 16K EPROM ) as the PCB was wired for a 16K ROM. So having wasted two 8K OTP EPROM's I turned to eBay and got an old TMS27c128 this time I needed to get it right as It would need a UV Eraser to clear it if I messed up.
So the ROM was burned and Jumper set for first 8K Block and it worked first time, Much to my relief. So it all works fine and dandy now, Yay!
The MF2 is basically the same tool as a MF128 in that you can freeze a program, study or edit the contents in Hex or Dec. Save the program to Tape or Disk and return to the point you were before you pressed the button. The MF2 also has a Reset button as well if you need to.
The MF2 has already helped me out with a game " Tomahawk " this came with a daft copy protection device called " Lenslok " and was utterly useless in that you could never read the two characters you had to input to get access to the game. So with the help of CPC Power I learned the Hex memory locations of the two characters, froze the game found the two values stored there, cross referenced against a ASCII code table returned back to the game, entered the characters and passed the check. I know it's a bit long-winded but it worked and then I can save the game after the Lenslok and use that backup instead.
I have added some pictures of it below and along with the 512K RAM Expansion ( 6128/6128+ Only ) I built as well and then all of them together, the M4 for SD/WiFi, MF2, 512KB RAM with all these plugged in the back it makes a supercharged 6128 that enables me to use symbOS 3 which is a Z80 based Multi-Tasking Operating System.
