I don't know if this will affect anyone else here on Atari Sector, but it definitely hits me well & truly between the eyes.
Lads, I've had my freeserve.co.uk address right from 1998!
Not bad - maybe you've had longer - but I always stuck with my very 1st email address/account as Freeserve was launched back in the days when you got an installation CD with your PC and it just automated the process for you of getting your 1st electronic mail address and configured all the fiddly POP settings etc.
So, when Freeserve sold out to french company Wanadoo, I wasn't bothered as they continued and maintained the server/service.
No problemo, either, when Orange bought out Wanadoo and all the old Freeserve mail clients like me - we just carried on using it same as before.
However, when new breadheads/shysters EE took over Orange's webmail service, we knew by the sudden, regular, chronic outages (24hrs down sometimes) and lack of a reliable service these past 12-18 months, that trouble was brewing...
Lo and behold, we were hit by this announcement, sneaking in under the radar t'other day:
Fair play - we old Freeserve customers don't actually pay anything to these EE people so why should they maintain something that clearly doesn't make them any profit and belongs to the past.
It's just a shame, that's all, that after 19 years (a helluva long time in computing circles) that I'm finally going to lose my original computing Windows mail 'identity' and will have to go over to someone like gmail... and of course, inform everyone that matters - friends, family, banks, various institutions/bodies that I have a new email address and they best use that in future as....
